Explorers is a volunteer organization which fosters adult learning in Salem, Massachusetts. It was formed in 1992 by a small group of Salem residents, some of whom were retired Salem State faculty members. Our Office Manager is our only paid employee. All tuition and donations are used for administrative expenses. Courses are taught by our members and by professionals who are recognized as accomplished in their professions or specific areas of interest. Classes are generally scheduled for four to six weeks. Membership is offered for a full year or single semester. In addition, there are intersession lectures scheduled during the winter and summer which are open to the community. We are members of the Road Scholar.

What We Offer

Our courses are currently offered during in person meetings or virtual sessions.  We offer lectures, discussions and participatory classes in the arts, sciences, current events, foreign affairs and foreign languages. Some courses require reading, language practice and active discussion. There are both writers and book groups. Explorers offers two academic terms per year beginning in September and March with two Intersession offerings during the winter and summer semester breaks. Intersessions are open to all who wish to attend, members and non-members and are free of charge.  Members may register for eight course offerings each semester.  Admission to all in-person classes requires proof of immunization and the wearing of face masks.
